Overview
The Danakil Depression lies well below sea level in the north-east of the country and is among the hottest places anywhere. It is also strikingly colourful: salt plains, mineral springs in yellow, green and orange, and the lava lake of Erta Ale.
It is a demanding trip. Permits and a local escort are required, temperatures are extreme, and facilities are basic. With the right preparation it is one of the most memorable landscapes you can visit.

Fly to Mekele, then travel by road with a specialist operator. Independent travel is not possible.
By four-wheel-drive vehicle with a local guide and escort; the final approach to Erta Ale is on foot.
