Great Ethiopian Run and Thanksgiving
Run or walk Africa’s biggest road race at 2,350 m on Sunday, then end the week at a Thanksgiving table in Addis Ababa.
Historical journeys
A long layover becomes an afternoon in Addis Ababa, seat of the African Union: the National Museum, the emperor’s cathedral, then back to Bole.
Overview
Ethiopian Airlines routes much of Africa through Bole, leaving many travellers with hours in a terminal. About 20 minutes away is the seat of the African Union, capital of a country that was never colonised and still keeps its own calendar and script. In about four hours you see the National Museum, stand at Haile Selassie’s tomb in Holy Trinity Cathedral and sit down to a coffee ceremony.
A longer layover adds Meskel Square; a late landing shortens the route, because your connection comes first. You need a visa to leave the airport: check evisa.gov.et and whether visa on arrival applies to your passport.
Itinerary
Your guide waits in arrivals with a name sign. The museum’s human-origins gallery holds casts of Lucy (3.2 million years old) and Selam, the child found at Dikika (about 3.3 million years old); Holy Trinity adds stained glass and the imperial tombs. Frankincense burns while beans roast, and you are back at Bole in time for check-in.
Itineraries can change with weather, road and flight conditions. We will tell you promptly if they do.
